Cheap and Easy Homemade Mosquito Repellent

There was a vicious text spreading through the family phone tree the other day. Someone heard that the mosquitoes were really bad at the lake this year and questioned if we should cancel or not. I immediately sent out a text saying, “When did a few mosquitoes ever stop the Marti’s?” My little brother backed me up and added, “All we have to do is load up on garlic a couple days before, at least that’s what I’m going to do. Let me apologize in advance for any garlic smells that may be excreted from my body.” Dad, who ate a clove every day with his sandwich,  educated us on the power of garlic (NOTE: A clove hidden in the dog’s food will cure worms, just FYI). I love the stuff! Here’s a quick and easy recipe to make your own garlic repellant:

Ingredients:

  • Minced garlic
  • mineral oil
  • lemon juice

Directions:

  • Mince a few cloves of garlic then cover with mineral oil. Allow it to sit for at least 24 hours. Next take a teaspoon of just the oil and mix it with 2 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Strain through a cheesecloth if you have any floaties then pour into a spray bottle. Shake before each use.
