Elizabeth and Hazel.
When the Supreme Court decided to outlaw racially segregated schools in 1957, some people didn’t take too kindly to it. This is a picture of Elizabeth Eckford, the teenager who led The Little Rock Nine past a mob of screaming and spitting white segregationists, on her first day of school. In the background is Hazel Bryan.
Hazel Bryan led a fairly conventional life. At 17, she dropped out of school, married and had children. As she got older she became increasingly tormented by her role in this awful event and eventually apologized to Elizabeth. It makes me wonder which opponents of same-sex marriage will be apologizing to the gay community in 20 years?
